Wisconsin Mini Cooper Style
In 1959, the British Motor Company rolled out the first Mini with a unique style, which had never been seen before. Although similar vehicles had been on the market, the style of the Mini and Cooper were completely different than the competition. The first designs always remind me of a 1930’s gangster car, which had been squashed together to make it smaller. The traditional grill, headlights, and sedan feel are what endeared consumers to this new style. The Mini’s style has evolved throughout the years to become what it is today.
The Mini style started to include a variety of body styles, including vans, pickup trucks, and a variety of customized looks by the 1960’s. The 80’s and 90’s were a difficult period for Mini with a drop in sales. In fact, the brand almost faded away until BMW purchased the Rover (Mini’s manufacturer) and revised the brand. The look of the Mini had not changed much over the decades, but it wasn’t style that hurt the sale of Minis during this time period. The problem was related more to lower gasoline prices and a desire by consumers to own larger vehicles.
The combination of higher gasoline prices, excellent marketing, and the popular trend of decreasing personal carbon foot prints was the first step in the resurgence of the Mini. The second part of the puzzle required a modernization of the Mini design style. The key to success would involve keeping the bones of the original style, while bringing the design into the 21st Century. Amazingly, the stars aligned and the Mini is definitely back!
Today’s Mini offers two different styles, the Cooper and the Clubman. The Cooper is a small compact car, while the Clubman is slightly larger. Both vehicles get excellent gas mileage with 28 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, which makes it a real competitor against the popular hybrids. The new models still have the trademark style of the originals; however the body offers more curves with a much less boxy feel. The result is a more aerodynamically designed vehicle with a much sportier look than the first style introduced in the late 1950’s and 1960’s. Of course the modern version offers extra features, such as mp3 players, as well as all of the safety equipment you would expect from a vehicle made today. Please don’t be fooled by their size, both of these cars perform very well in crash tests.
